To the Students of Next Quarter

Dear Future Student,

English 110.01 is a required class, but do not see it as something that you have to do. This view of the class will make it not as appealing to you as a student. Things you have to do are never as fun as things you want to do, but if you look at this class as making you a better writer, reader, and student, then this class becomes less of a burden and more of a way to improve yourself.

In this class, I have written two major papers and multiple shorter assignments. The two major papers help your writing and research skills because there is a lot that goes into them. You learn how to analyze certain forms of media, from music videos to essays and articles, looking for patterns and themes. This can be applied to many other aspects of your university experience including studying for other classes. You also learn how to write a paper for a proper audience, whether they are professors and researchers or your fellow classmates.

The many smaller assignments range from internet blogs, such as this one, to sections of research papers to fictional stories. I have never been much of a blogger, so this has been an interesting experience for me. Writing a research paper section by section helps when it comes time to write the entire thing. Instead of having seven pages to research and write, you already have five or six pages done that you just have to merge into a final paper. The smaller assignments are written in a much looser style without all the restrictions of formal writing.

To be successful in this class, complete your assignments and go to class. That is really all there is to it. If you write something incorrectly, it will be revised and you will have a chance to redo it. Take your time on assignments and do them in a timely manner and you will be successful.
